Diploma recognition (Anerkennung) in Germany depends on whether your profession is regulated or not. For most professions, a ZAB evaluation is sufficient — but doctors, engineers and teachers need a special procedure.

ZAB Zeugnisbewertung — Credential Evaluation
Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen (ZAB) is the central institution for evaluating foreign diplomas in Germany. The ZAB Zeugnisbewertung shows how your diploma compares in the German education system.

Regulated Professions — Special Procedure
For regulated professions in Germany, the ZAB is not enough — full recognition of qualifications by the competent authority is required. Here's an overview of the most common regulated professions for the Serbian diaspora.
Doctors / Medical staff

Partial recognition and adaptation
If your diploma is not fully equivalent, Germany offers two paths to bridge the gap: an adaptation course or a knowledge exam.

Adaptation courseSupervised practical adaptation — usually 6–12 months at an institution. Done alongside or instead of work.
Eignungsprüfung
Knowledge examTheoretical and/or practical exam. One-time — pass or retake. Faster path if you're confident.
Adaptation visa (§16d AufenthG)
Germany issues a special visa for attending an adaptation course or knowledge exam. Duration: up to 18 months, with the option to switch to a work permit upon completion.

For unregulated professions, you don't need to wait for Anerkennung to work. For regulated professions (doctors, teachers), you must wait for the process to complete.
What if my profession isn't regulated in Germany?
If your profession is unregulated (IT, economics, marketing, design, engineering in the private sector), formal diploma recognition is NOT required for employment. A ZAB Zeugnisbewertung (208 EUR) is sufficient — it shows what your diploma compares to in the German system. Employers often ask for it, but it's not a legal requirement.
Is online education recognized in Germany?
It depends on the institution's accreditation. If your university is accredited in the issuing country and listed in the anabin database with an H+ or H+/- rating, the diploma is recognized regardless of study format. Online diplomas from unaccredited institutions are not recognized. Check at anabin.kmk.org before applying.
How long does the ZAB Zeugnisbewertung take?
The standard processing time is 3-4 months from submitting complete documentation. During high-demand periods, it can take up to 6 months. Express processing is not available. Tip: submit your application as early as possible, ideally before arriving in Germany or immediately after arrival.
